How a Garmin Approach S1 Golf GPS Watch Can Improve Your Game

Have you ever used a Golf GPS rangefinder? I have been lucky enough to recently get my hands on a Garmin Approach S1 Golf Watch which makes a pleasant change from the more traditional handheld golf GPS products on the market – as you might have guessed, it is worn on the wrist rather than carried around.

When you first use it you will be pleasantly surprised at how compact and light the Garmin Approach S1 Golf GPS Watch actually is. You might already know Garmin anyway as a provider of high tech GPS gadgetry so it will come as no shock to you that they have nailed the location based aspects of this rangefinder. It is a great addition to the golf GPS range and seems a natural successor to their previous product the Garmin Approach G5.

How does the Garmin Approach S1 Watch work?

Dead simple, it knows when you are near a golf course (providing the watch status has been set to active) and will alert you to that fact. Once you are on the fairway you have all the distance information at your fingertips ready to go. The magic all happens due to an ultra small GPS receiver that is inside the S1 watch – and there are tonnes of golf courses already installed on it.

In the unlikely case that the course you are playing is not on the Garmin Approach S1 all you do is go to their website and download an updated version of courses. This is free and you don’t need to subscribe or pay any fees. All you do is pay for the watch – job done!

Golfing fashion? Well not quite, but nearly!

You wear it like a watch, and it looks like a digital watch anyway so there’s nothing clunky or particularly un-fashionable about it. The display contains all the course information so you know how far you need to drive your shot, and whilst it won’t tell you what club to select it’s helped me to appreciate my shot selection a lot better.

If you are worried about whether or not you can use this under competitive golf rules then don’t. It’s fully ratified and doesn’t break any rules. A number of professionals even use the Garmin Approach S1 golf watch. I am not quite at that level yet but my handicap has improved this month – and there is definitely some credit due to the Garmin Approach.

Perhaps it might improve your game too?

If you are in the market for a golf GPS rangefinder then I don’t think you can go too far wrong with the Approach S1. It’s a cheap price, and works expertly due to Garmin’s involvement – they are the world leaders in GPS and it shows.

There’s another final aspect as well I should mention – it tells you how far you have walked. So if you don’t think you’ve burned off quite enough calories then go do another loop of the club house! I love my Garmin golf watch and would recommend it to anyone.
